My name is Scott Holmes, and I’m the owner of Sandeman Fly Fishing on Nantucket, MA. My passion for fishing began when I was a kid, spending early mornings on the Connecticut River with my grandfather. Growing up in Virginia, I spent countless days exploring its rivers and lakes, always drawn to the water and the challenge of the next catch.
While in college, I was offered the chance to work on Nantucket for the summer—a decision that changed my life. A friend took me surfcasting, and after landing my first schoolie striper, I was instantly hooked. The island’s incredible access to the water, along with the tight-knit fishing community, made Nantucket feel like home. Soon after, I joined the Nantucket Fire Department, where I’ve proudly served for the past ten years and was recently promoted to Captain. I am also a member of the Nantucket Anglers Club and participate in many of the Islands fishing tournaments. I am currently obtaining my charter captains license.
About six years ago, I picked up a fly rod for the first time. Fly fishing on Nantucket is no easy feat—strong winds and powerful currents test your skill and patience on every cast. That challenge drew me in. During the pandemic, I bought a beginner fly-tying kit and started crafting flies for fun and for friends. With time, practice, and invaluable advice from local charter captains, I honed my craft and focused on creating high-quality, durable flies that truly catch fish. A year ago, after being asked to produce a large batch of flies for a captain on the island, the idea for Sandeman Flies was born. What started as a hobby has grown into a passion-driven business dedicated to producing flies that withstand Nantucket’s most challenging conditions and help anglers make unforgettable memories on the water.
